South Korean Parliament to Decide President's Future Next Week

Seoul, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) Opposition parties in South Korea will vote in Parliament on the impeachment motion against President Park Geun-hye next Friday, December 9th, party sources said.

The decision was taken at a meeting held by the Democratic Party, the Popular Party and the Justice Party.

To be approved, besides the 172 votes of the opposition, at least 28 other votes are needed from the nearly 40 members from the ruling Saenuri Party who support the impeachment motion, in order to obtain 200 votes of 300 at the Parliament.

According to local press, Saenuri Party asked the president to set her resignation date by the end of April and to hold new elections in June.

The president is under pressure due to the scandal involving her close collaborator, Choi Soon-sil, who was arrested for corruption and abuse of power.

The South Korean president had to apologize for allowing Choi Soon-sil to edit some of her speeches and use her influence to accumulate benefits.

Park announced for the first time on Tuesday during her third message to the nation in recent weeks her intention to resign and end her mandate ending in February 2018, provided that Parliament approve a formula to ensure the passing of powers according to the Constitution.

The opposition rejected her proposal and accused her of trying to avoid a political prosecution against her.
